12 Apr 2021- Pubmas Day

It’s Pubmas Day and all the pubs are open again after months. I’m leaving it a few days before I go, but I’ve had a ride around them to see how busy they are and this is the report.

Why I’ve Given up High Street Shopping

They say retail is dead and I have to agree, but it hasn’t been killed off by online it’s committed suicide because of a lack of customer focus and overley officious staff.

A Glorious Spring Ride

On a glorious spring day there’s only one thing to do and that’s goon my favourite ride along the canals and the River Trent around Nottingham.

Every year about this time I read this beautiful book and it reminds me how hard it must be to survive the winter exposed to the elements

What Future is There for this World?

This way of life is simply not sustainable; however, we’ve reached the stage where we’ve overtaken the point at which we can do anything about it apart from slow the inevitable crash down by a few years. At some point in the next hundred years we are going to have depleted many of the vital resources we need for our current way of life, we will no longer be able to feed the tens of billions of humans on the planet and parts of the planet will no longer be habitable.

Newark Cycling Loop – 40 Miles

This is a route I’ve ridden several times before. Setting off from the village of Dry Doddington it is mostly flat and good going on generally quiet roads. The route goes through the village of Claypole in to the centre of Newark and out again to Fiskerton, where it passes close to the River Trent and through several other villages to cross the River at Lowdham. The return to Dry Doddington is cross country via quiet country lanes. A total of 40 miles with lots of things to see and numerous opportunities for refreshments along the way.

Stapleford Wood is an area of mixed woodland of roughly a thousand acres on the outskirts of Newark. It is popular with walkers, dog walkers, joggers and horse riders alike. There are a variety of trails through the woods including a limited number of accessible trails near the main car park.

Furloughed Walk

What a glorious few weeks I’ve had. I was fortunate enough to be fuloughed straight away, as soon as Britain went in to lockdown.  Consequently, I’ve spent five weeks in what has been some exceptionally warm spring sunshine enjoying watching spring unfold in front of my eyes. Moreover, living in a village has afforded me plenty of opportunity to get out and about on my bike and by foot.

Cromford – Matlock Loop – Walking in the Derbyshire Dales

All in all a fairly easy walk with just a few sharp uphill sections and plenty to see including; good views across the valley, lots of wellkept tucked away houses, beautiful gardens along the side of the river and plenty of opportunity for browsing and eating in Cromford, Matlock and Matlock Bath
